Toddlers are at a dangerous age when it comes to food. Most don't have enough teeth to chew really well and they are inclined to run, talk or laugh with food in their mouths. That means parents need to be aware of potential food hazards and always stay close by when their toddler is eating.
According to one study, the food that most commonly cause choking are:
Hot Dogs
Nuts
Hard Candies
Grapes
PopCorn
Small children have also been known to choke on carrots, apple pieces, beans and bread (especially white bread with peanut butter, which can form a gluey ball if not chewed thoroughly). These foods should not be fed to toddlers unless they have been modified to make then less dangerous. For example, hot dog should be cut in quarters lengthwise and then cut in halves or quarters, carrots and apples can be grated or cooked, sandwiches can be cut in "fingers" to encourage smaller bites.
We are thankful for Julian for sharing this with us.
